The Complete Guide
How to Clean Your Espresso Machine the Right Way
A clean espresso machine is the foundation of a great shot. Even the finest commercial espresso machines; La Marzocco, Victoria Arduino, Nuova Simonelli — will underperform if they're not cleaned consistently. At Passport Coffee, with over 43 years of espresso equipment experience, we've seen firsthand how proper cleaning extends machine life, protects your investment, and most importantly, keeps every shot tasting its best.
Why Cleaning Your Espresso Machine Matters
Coffee oils are the silent enemy of espresso quality. With every shot pulled, oils from the coffee grounds coat the group head, portafilter, and basket. Left uncleaned, these oils turn rancid, adding bitter, stale flavors to even the best espresso blends. Regular espresso machine cleaning removes these oils before they affect your coffee.
Beyond taste, dirty machines are harder on your equipment. Buildup in the group head and solenoid valves leads to inconsistent pressure, slower flow rates, and eventually costly repairs.
Daily Espresso Machine Cleaning Routine
Perform these steps every day, at the end of each shift:
Group Head & Portafilter
- Remove the portafilter and knock out the puck immediately after each shot
- Rinse the portafilter basket under hot water after every use
- Flush the group head with clean water for 5–10 seconds between each drink
- At end of day: backflush with a blind basket (no detergent) 3–5 times per group
Steam Wands
- Purge and wipe the steam wand after every single use — milk scalds onto the wand within seconds
- At end of day: soak the steam wand tip in hot water for 10–15 minutes to dissolve milk residue
Drip Tray & Knock Box
- Empty and rinse the drip tray daily
- Wash the knock box insert daily
Weekly Espresso Machine Cleaning Routine
Backflushing with Espresso Machine Cleaner
- Use a blind basket and approved espresso machine detergent (such as EVO from Caffetto, Cafiza or Puly Caff)
- Run 5–8 backflush cycles per group head
- Follow with 5+ clean-water backflush cycles to rinse all detergent residue
Portafilter & Baskets
- Soak portafilters and baskets in espresso cleaner solution for 20-30 minutes
- Scrub with a soft brush and never use steel wool or abrasive pads
- Rinse thoroughly and dry before reassembling
Group Head Gaskets & Shower Screens
- Remove the shower screen and group head gasket (if accessible)
- Soak and scrub to remove compacted coffee oils
- Inspect gaskets for wear... replace if cracked or compressed flat
Monthly Espresso Machine Maintenance Cleaning
- Descale if your water supply is hard (consult your Passport Coffee technician for the right descaling product for your machine model)
- Deep clean all steam wand components
- Inspect and clean water reservoir and filters
- Check and clean solenoid valves if pressure seems inconsistent
Pro Tip from Passport Coffee: Use a water softener or filtered water system to dramatically reduce scale buildup. This is the single best thing you can do for the longevity of a commercial espresso machine.
Cleaning Products We Recommend
- EVO from Caffetto- Recommended by Passport coffee
- Cafiza — industry espresso machine cleaner
- Puly Caff — professional group head cleaner
Always use cleaners specifically designed for espresso machines. Dish soap and general degreasers can leave residues and damage internal components.
